"I feel strong and confidet. My body looks amazing.
The transformation has blown me away. This journey has
taught me discipline and to believe in myself and the
importance of setting goals."
I'm sure many of you have heard this before-TV cameras add weight. Well,
I'm on TV fie days a week, and not always hiding behind a desk. Who wants
to look plump on TV? Not me! Another reason is that heart disease runs in my
family. I lost two uncles to heart attacks, and my dad had quadruple bypass
surgery, even after a lifestyle change. I didn't want that to be my fate.
For a few years I've thought about entering a fitness ompetition but kept this
little dream of mine to myself. Then one night, I was partying in a night club
(really, this is how it happened). I ran into one of the trainers at my gym, and as
we boogied on the dance flor she said to me in a drunken slur, "I'm entering
a fitness ompetition, and you should too!" I don't remember drinking a lot
that night, but I heard myself say, 'Okay!' "
I knew I couldn't do it on my own. I interviewed a couple of trainers before
stumbling onto a picture of Sandra Bueckert on the Internet in a bright yellow
bikini and a body harder than calculus. Wow! I wanted to look like that! I read
her profile and immeditely sent her an e-mail.
Sandra wanted to start right away, and her husband, Doug, was going to train
me. Well, I thought I was nervous when I met Sandra, but when I met Doug I
knew I was in trouble. Don't let his shy demeanor fool you. He means business.
But I didn't find tht out until he piled more and more weight on me-every
week. I had to be organized when it came to my meals as well. Every night
before bed I would pack my soft cooler with my meals for the day. And, yes, I
ate carbohydrates-and still lost weight!
During my first eek of training and dieting, I was feeling pretty good about
myself. I wasn't starving. I had meals that satisfied me with variety and flavour.
It was all good. Then Hershey's sent two massive baskets to the newsroom full
of every kind of chocolate you could imagine, from dark to white, chocolate
covered macadamia nuts to foot-long bars. They even sent chocolate chips. I
thought I was going to lose it as everyone in the newsroom dug in. I put my
head down and focused on my work like I've never focused before.
A couple times a week I'd train with Doug. I would never count. I would
just wait to hear those sweet words: "Two more." I'd push and pull for whatseemed like forever, close to tears, making
all kinds of strange noises, wondering
when the heck Doug would see that I
was suffering. Then, finall, he would
say, "Okay, three more." It was like he
said, "You just won a million dollars."
Despite the agony, I was always happy
and surprised at what I could do with a
little hard work and determination. After
every workout I always had something to brag
about. Eleven bodyweight chin-ups, 225-pound
dead lifts, fity-fie-pound dumbbell chest presses.
Yeah!
Now, we can't forget the girly part of this entire
journey to the stage. We have to get the right bikini,
and the right shoes! The shoes for this competition
can only be found in adult boutiques. Yep, that's right,
sex shops. I was accompanied on this special shopping
trip by Tracey, who's also training for this competition.
For me it was an adventure to go shopping there. For
her, an accountant and mother of two, a bit traumatic.
She got there early and went inside, but was so freaked
out that she darted out of there faster than a sports car
on the Deerfoot. I arrived shortly after to rescue her.
Yes, it's hard work, and, yes, there were days that I
thought I couldn't go on, but the rewards are plenty.
I feel great. I'm the healthiest I've ever been. I feel
strong and confidet. My body looks amazing. The
transformation has blown me away. This journey has
taught me discipline and to believe in myself and the
importance of setting goals. Friends are shocked and
impressed when they see me. People at work are questioning what I'm eating
and how much I'm working out. But the one question I get a lot is, "What's the
first thing ou're going to eat when it's all over?" And without hesitation I say,
"A chocolate Crave cupcake with coconut icing!"
I'm not letting this body go. Soon after this fitness ompetition, I'm seriously
thinking about doing another one this summer. I think I'm hooked!
