"I made a promise to myself to do
everything I could do to be successful
and accomplish my goals."
Over the last couple of years, Carla
had watched members of her family
run into multiple health issues. She
wanted to do as much as possible
to avoid a similar fate. Lately, she
was always tired but could not
get a proper night's sleep. She
did not have much energy.
She also wanted to decrease
her body fat and improve her
fitness level.
"One On One Fitness was the first
company that I contacted.
When I met with Sandra, I
was very nervous and unsure
about what to ask. As we
discussed what I was looking
for, I became comfortable and
knew this was the place for me."
Carla's initial challenge was getting over her fear of working out in public
while trying things that she would not normally be comfortable with. At the
time Carla started her program, she and her husband were in the middle of
renovating an older home. "We happened to be at the point in the renovation
when we had gutted the kitchen. We had no counters, cupboards, fridge, or
stove. This made it very difficult o try and eat healthily because we were
basically eating out for every meal." She had also just switched positions at
work and was travelling a little more than usual.
To help Carla make the best of her circumstances, One On One's registered
dietitian, Gillian Proctor, provided her with some nutrition guidance. Carla
found out that she was not eating enough. She would often go fie to six
hours between meals, which left her ravenous and set up to overeat at her
next meal. She learned to incorporate a snack. Gillian also provided her with some dining-out strategies so that she could select healthier fare from any restaurant menu.
This made a world of difference. "I've really enjoyed doing something for
myself and learning about my body and how to become healthier," she says.
She also credits her trainer, Drew Milne, for doing an excellent job of keeping
her interested in her workout sessions. "We are always trying new exercises,
and Drew is always challenging me to go a little further. I now know in which
order you should work your muscles and how important it is to keep them
guessing."
In the past, Carla would walk into a gym and have no idea about what to do.
Sometimes she would just turn around and leave. Coming to One On One
gave her the knowledge and motivation that she needed.
"I made a promise to myself to do everything I could do to be successful and
accomplish my goals. I had never set personal goals before, and it was very
beneficial or me." Carla considers herself to be a person driven by deadlines.
She now weight-trains twice per week and completes four to fie cardio
sessions on her own. To stay accountable, she kept a journal detailing her
physical activity and assesses the results on a weekly basis.
She also planned ahead for setbacks. She altered her work hours so she could
hit the gym after work and still have enough time to spend with her family. "If
we have plans that interrupt my routine, I will either do extra on other days or
try to go for a walk outside on my lunches."
Since starting at One On One Fitness, Carla decreased her body fat from 21.27 to
17.53 percent. She has brought her body fat to a level of leanness reserved
for the category of an athlete according to her last fitness assessmet. Carla
is very proud of her progress. "I have more confidene in my personal and
business life now," she says.
She is also grateful to her husband for encouraging her to quit complaining
and do something about what was bothering her. He provided the push
that she needed to take her health into her hands. Looking ahead, she plans
to continue to improve her cardiovascular levels, increase her strength, and
continue working on leading a healthier life. Congratulations to you, Carla. |

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
