Why do you work out?
To feel better! I want to take care of myself and be an example to my daughters.
How did you first get involved with exercising?
I love the way exercise makes me feel. I have always tried to exercise, but I never had a clear idea of what to do. I was very much an all or nothing person. I would commit to working out, but then I would inevitably miss a workout or two and feel like a failure and give up. I had no goals or direction.
Why did you come to One On One?
I had seen One On One Fitness in a newsletter and checked out the Web site quite a while ago. I was very interested but couldn't justify the luxury of spending money/time on myself. Last summer, I spent another season on the beach feeling totally uncomfortable most of the time. It was depressing and exhausting. We came back to Calgary, and I talked to my husband about going to One On One Fitness. He supported me, and I booked an appointment for a fi tness assessment.
What were your goals?
I definitely didn't like the way my body looked or how my clothes fi t. I wanted a body I could be proud of. After a couple of sessions, I confided in my trainer Aletha Nuttall that I wanted to be able to wear a two-piece bathing suit on a vacation to Mexico. At 47 years of age, you have no idea what a huge goal that was for me.
What did you find to be the most difficult aspect of changing your lifestyle?
Cardio! I love strength training because of the way it makes my body look. The cardio is a big challenge for me.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of working out for you?
I have definitely changed my shape and gone down several clothing sizes. I was wearing a size 10 or 12 when I started. Now I am wearing a size 6. I am stronger, have more energy, and a very positive attitude. My husband Kevin loves the way that I look. I am away from the house quite a bit to work out (I thought this might cause some friction), but Kevin absolutely supports me and encourages me to go. We went on our vacation in January. I scheduled a body-fat test for the day before we left, and I was ecstatic! I wore my two-piece every day for two whole weeks, and I have never felt so good in my entire life! I don't have a perfect body, but my pride in myself and the results I have achieved made me walk prouder than ever before!
Since returning from our vacation, I've set a new goal with Aletha to be under twenty-per-cent body fat by May 1st!
How often do you work out?
I do my strength training workout three times a week, including one weekly or bi-weekly session with Aletha. My cardio is done on the opposite nights of my strength workouts, and I take one day off per week.
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell someone who is working out and not seeing any changes?
I would tell them that they are probably making the same mistakes that I made. We tend to do the same thing over and over again and then wonder why we are not seeing results. If you are putting in time to work out, you should be seeing results.
Parting comments:
We women tend to put ourselves last. There is always something that is more important than fi nding time for ourselves or spending money on ourselves. I had a hard time justifying the "extravagance" of a personal trainer, but I wish I had done it years ago. It is so much more than just a conditioning program. It has truly changed my life. It is not selfi sh to take care of yourself and feel good about yourself. |

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
