Winner 2004 Lean & Mean Challenge, for Greatest Percentage Change in Body Fat

Liz started at 36.13 per cent body fat and over the challenge took it down to 20.39 per cent, a stunning achievement in a twelve-week time frame.

Liz began by rethinking and reorganizing her workout sessions. She did cardio five days a week on her own time and concentrated on weight training during her three hours a week with her instructor at One On One. "I think that was key," she says. The intent was to boost her metabolism and build more fat-burning muscle, and, ultimately, it was a winning strategy.

Accountability helped keep her on track. "For me, the fact that the workouts were scheduled - you make it priority. Otherwise, it's easy to say, my day is too busy. When it's scheduled like that, it's an appointment," says Liz.

Keeping her coming back was the atmosphere in the studio, the personal attention, and the privacy of the space: "That's why I chose One On One."

Joining the Lean & Mean competition was almost incidental; Liz had already made a firm internal commitment to herself. "The day I started going to One On One - the second week of August - that's when I made my commitment to getting back into shape," says Liz.

What makes her accomplishment all the more impressive is that she has rheumatoid arthritis. Movement can help keep the arthritis in check. "You definitely feel much better when you're moving, but there are issues around working out without hurting myself." Her trainer, Codrut, had the experience and knowledge to keep the sessions intense but safe.

Liz still hasn't decided how to spend one thousand dollars at Southcentre, but "I do lots of sports, so it's possible it will be applied to sporting equipment," she says.

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
