Lori Grill

Lori Grill started coming to One On One in February 2003, but it wasn't until last year that she decided to make a serious commitment to losing weight. In only one year Lori has lost 33 pounds. "This is the lightest I've been since I was 20 years old!" says Lori.

It all started with a trip to Mexico. "I was petrified about wearing a bathing suit," she says. "I knew it was time to make a change." Lori was already throwing money into a fitness program that she wasn't committed to, so she made a conscious decision to focus on her training.

As a busy mortgage broker and partner in the Mortgage Group, Lori was working long hours, many of which included entertainingand being entertained by clients with rich food and alcohol. She was nervous about her clients' reaction to her decision to watch her calorie intake at these functions, but they were more than understanding, and now they all want to know her secret!

"Truth is, there is no secret," says Lori. "Working out and a healthy, balanced diet is the only way." In social situations, Lori consciously watches her portions. She does not neglect any food groups and never says she can't have something. "All the fad diets I tried before forced me to deny certain food or entire food groups. At first the pounds slip off, but it is impossible to keep them off, because eventually I always craved the food even more.

"Lori was doing cardio once or twice a week. She also suffered from "frozen shoulder," an ailment that seriously restricted the movement of her shoulder joint. Today, after working with her trainer, Tad, for one year, Lori has regained about 95 per cent of her range of motion. Because of her training she doesn't have to undergo a painful medical procedure.

She is now doing cardio three to four times a week for 45 minutes on her treadmill at home. In the summer she rides her road bike with her husband, a serious cyclist, with whom she proudly keeps up. She does a full-body weight workout three times a week, two at home and one at One On One.

Lori highly recommends setting goals. Her goal was to run the last year's Stampede 10-kilometre Road Race, and now she hopes to run a half-marathon in Winnipeg! She is absolutely thrilled to be able to set this goal and realises that it is realistic. "For me, it's not about the weight; it's about how I look and feel, and I've never felt better."

Lori's achievements remind her how important it is to take time for yourself. "No matter how busy I am at work I make certain I take the time to exercise," says Lori. "I'll call and schedule an appointment with my trainer, Tad, or get up extra early-whatever it takes. Skipping a workout is just not an option."

Lori says her biggest challenge was convincing herself that her own health and fitness was just as important as working. "I finally realised that I can have a successful career and be fit too." Lori has made substantial changes to her work schedule, making herself available to clients two nights a week instead of every night. "It was time to put my own health first, and I will never go back to my old ways."

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
