Mark Reid jokes that he carried all his weight on his belly and chin. The chin is
long gone. He no longer suffers from back trouble, which is a far cry from the
pain he had suffered as a result of a slipped disc several years ago. The back
pain was aggravated by the extra weight on his midsection. He used to wake
up feeling as stiff as cardboard. Now it's night and day. Mark says, "I have no
desire to go back to pain. I sleep so much better now."
Prior to coming to One On One, he used to suffer from a migraine a week. His
last migraine was three months ago.
Mark's wife Aylin jokes, "Mark has gone from running for a bag of chips
during football games to standing on a fi t ball during the commercials."
"I used to eat enough to feed a small army," says Mark. He has since learned
the importance of eating proper portions and how to balance lean proteins,
whole grains, fruit, and vegetables into his day. A better balanced diet has
allowed him to maximize his energy and enhance his training.
The dietary changes and exercise plan has been a winning combination.
At his highest, Mark weighed 185 pounds. He is now a trim 145 pounds and
dropped from 20.47-per-cent body fat to an impressive 8.1-per-cent body fat.
Learning how to eat better enabled Mark to consciously
make changes in a way that worked for him. Protein has
become his best friend. He also puts out healthier snacks
during games, and he came up with the novel approach
of practicing standing on his fi t ball to take his mind off
the fridge.
He did not think he could ever achieve his goals to this
extent. Aylin twisted his arm to come to One On One.
While Aylin was ready to go, Mark was skeptical about
getting a personal trainer. They were training on their
own but seemed to hit a plateau and needed guidance
to continue on.
Twice a week they worked out with their
trainer Kavan Allison at One On One and did "homework"
at the fi tness centre in their condominium complex.
Working out together has enhanced their relationship.
They get up earlier to exercise, which has the added
benefi t of giving them more time to spend together. In
addition to shared workouts, they eat the same foods and
stay motivated to work harder. Aylin also lost 10 pounds
along the way.
This is very impressive when you learn that
Aylin is completing a very grueling neurology residency.
Coworkers at the offi ce have given Mark a lot of
encouragement. On Mondays and Wednesdays he does
upper body work and on Tuesdays and Thursdays he
works his abs and his lower body. His current goal is to
increase his muscle mass.
"I'm happy Aylin got me involved," says Mark. Together
they've taken their fi tness to an even greater level of
commitment and set up their own mini-gym in their
condo unit. To reach his goals, Mark did weights three
times per week and cardio for 30 to 45 minutes four to fi ve
times per week.
Mark was more concerned about putting on muscle and
struggled to do his cardio. He really hit his stride when he
used the hour before Aylin got home from work to fi t in
his workouts. Both he and Aylin are now giving morning
workouts a whirl. They both agree that it is far easier to
pull yourself out of bed when there's someone to do it
with.
Congratulations Mark and Aylin. We're proud of you both. |

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
