Winner 2004 Lean and Mean Challenge for greatest percentage drop in body fat
"I was tired of breaking promises to myself, and for the first time in three years I kept them." |
| |
Background:
Thirty-four-year-old Richelle is married and has one three-year-old child. She has been a student since 1996. She works full time and recently passed the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (the EPP). |
| |
| Previously, Richelle had trained at One On One in 1995 with Sandra Bueckert. "I became a big fan and maintained my gains for a couple of years," she comments. She then began university at 26 to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a psychologist. "Many things became secondary to school, including my fitness. For every year I was in school, I gained a pound," she adds. |
| |
| Looking back, Richelle realized that she let her education and work and the renovation of her home - which helped her to put on a few more pounds - get in the way of a healthy lifestyle. She always knew that she would dedicate the time to lose the weight when it was convenient. "There never seemed to be a convenient time," Richelle adds, "and then our daughter was born." |
| |
| "I spent three years struggling to lose the weight and before returning to One On One had resigned myself to...never being slim again. I tried to convince myself that as a mother in my thirties I should make peace with the fact that I am meant to carry around extra weight." |
| |
Decision:
Then, while getting a gift certificate for a friend, Richelle saw Sandra Bueckert, who had just emerged from her own personal struggles, healthier, happier, and as confident as she had ever seen, not to mention...a yummy mommy. |
| |
| "I couldn't use the excuses that worked so well for three years any more," continues Richelle. "At 38, Sandra is a mother, wife, and professional. I thought, if she can do it, I can do it." |
| |
Results:
Since her first training session on June 23, she has lost 25 pounds and moved from a size 14 to a size eight. And if there were a time when life got in the way and made it "inconvenient" to dedicate the hours required to live a healthy lifestyle, this should have been it for Richelle. Sadly, she lost a young friend in an accident, and her grandfather died in July. Her cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumor one week after having twins, and she had to maintain a strict study schedule of 300 hours in three months if she wanted to pass her exam. |
| |
Motivation:
For Richelle, emotional eating could easily have returned. This was her old habit of rewarding herself with food for studying. What motivated her? For the first time in a long time she participated in healthy selfishness. "I was determined to make a promise to myself and keep it this time. I thought about the role model I could be to our daughter, and I also wanted to have energy to give back the kind of attention my husband gives me." |
| |
| Richelle continues, "Sandra surrounds herself with dedicated and hardworking people. For this I am truly grateful. The accountability I felt toward David, my trainer, and the confidence he has in me made me want to have the same confidence in myself. I never would have pushed myself as hard as he pushed me. David literally worked my butt of by pushing me to levels I wasn't aware I could reach." |
| |
Support:
With a nutrition consultation under her belt, she learned about and began practicing portion control. "I really didn't feel like I sacrificed anything in the food department," says Richelle. "I love to cook, and I love all the experiences food brings. I still eat everything I ate before but less of it...consciously and with control." |
| |
"To quote a good friend of mine, 'Who knew that diet and exercise still works so well?' The best part is that I haven't changed my lifestyle dramatically, which translates into successful maintenance when I reach my goal of 145 pounds."
|
Rewards:
"I have entered my 34th year fitter and slimmer than I have been since high school. I have more energy to do the things I need and want to do, not to mention the beginning of a fabulous career." |
| |
| "I don't think I would have been as mentally prepared to do what needed to be done if I didn't start taking control of my fitness. It might have taken me a long time to get here. I don't know what I was waiting for because it feels great...too fabulous to put into words. Why can't we strive to be the best we can be at any age?" |
