Rudy and Deena Janzen

By David Twan
While motorcycle touring in Colorado in June of 2003, Rudy and Deena Janzen were enjoying the eighth day of what was to be a four-week holiday. With Deena riding on the back of Rudy's bike, the couple was completely unaware of the following events that would change their lives forever.

While cruising down the highway, an oncoming car was attempting to make a left-hand turn and inadvertently collided with the Janzen's bike. The devastating injuries fractured Rudy's femur, pelvis, acetabulum and claim three inches of Deena's left femur, which would require the insertion of a metallic plate.

Rudy, now sixty-six years of age, was confined to his hospital bed for the first seven weeks as his pelvis needed to heal before he could bear weight on his legs again. Deena, now fifty-seven years of age, needed three surgeries to insert donor bone to replace the three inches of femur lost in her left leg and more than 320 hours of physiotherapy over a period of fifteen months.

Throughout the healing process Deena remembers, "I considered being able to go through everything with Rudy a blessing. We supported one another, as we were very aware of each other's incremental progress. We had to be patient and caregiver to each other and felt good for it." The long, arduous journey to recovery included learning how to walk again for both Rudy and Deena.

In June of 2007, four years since their accident, Rudy and Deena were encouraged to start a weight-training program by physiotherapist Mary Alice Brennan to compliment their sessions.

They began personal training with me and established a goal of returning to their once very independent and active lifestyle. I was very eager to begin working with Rudy and Deena, as I hadn't trained anyone with injuries as extensive as theirs. They had a lot of obstacles to overcome, but I wanted to encourage them to take their fitness to the next level.

When you take into consideration how new they were to weight training, the extent of their injuries and the limits that were imposed on them, Rudy and Deena share a positive attitude that has inspired me. Rather than sit back and do nothing, they made their fitness a priority. The results have not gone unnoticed.

While discussing his workout regimen, Rudy said, "I feel great! I've increased my strength, flexibility, mobility, and endurance in such a short time. One day I'd like to be able to ride my bike again."

Deena comments, "I was very surprised by how fast you can make progress. I have a lot of confidence in the program designed for Rudy and myself and love the fact that it takes place in such a fun and relaxed setting."

The Janzens' program includes stretching, body weight exercises, free weights, machines, and light cardio. Rudy and Deena want to continue to exercise and learn as much as possible so that they can lead active lifestyles well into the future. They are now planning to continue with a fitness routine at home to supplement what they are doing at One On One.
