Ryan Scott had been training, “off and on for over 10 years.” I would
be on for about a three-month cycle of working out and then not
training at all. Needless to say, he wasn’t getting the results that he
had hoped for and had trouble staying motivated.
Last year, Ryan decided to look into hiring a personal trainer. He
researched various trainers on the Web and, conveniently enough,
One On One was located in the building where he worked. He then
ran into a One On One client in the elevator who further convinced
him to give it a try.
He met with personal trainer Codrut Curteanu and set up a three month
trial package. ”From the start I was impressed at the challenge
that the workouts presented and how great I was feeling afterwards,”
he comments.
Ryan has had his challenges. “During this time both my business
and personal life became very stressful.” His family business was
increasing rapidly, and Ryan was in the midst of separating from his
wife.
"Training helped to keep me sane." He found that consistently
exercising, whether he felt like it or not, and having a scheduled
time forced him to go and has helped to relieve some of his stress.
Ryan used to have a "bad back" and needed to see a chiropractor
frequently. Strengthening my back has reduced my chiropractic
needs considerably. "I never have a sore back anymore, except for
those hard back workout days Codrut puts him through." he jokes.
I have always felt that weight training was something I would be
interested in, and although I dabbled in it, I have never seen the
results like I have over the last eight months.
Sister Christine followed him shortly to One On One. Christine had
struggled with illness throughout her childhood. The result of being
sick so often was that she wasn't great at team sports and started to
hate gym classes and fitness activities at school.
As she started to feel better, she started a gym program. Getting
sick would curtail her fitness plans, and, once again, she would fall
off the exercise wagon. She was also frustrated by inexperienced
fitness instructors who were programmed to focus on diet and
weight loss rather than the personal goals Christine had set for
herself.
Coming to One On One has allowed her to make steady progress
under the watchful eye of trainer Aletha Nuttall. Christine's workouts
alternate between heavier weights and lower repetitions and higher
repetitions and lower weight. With each session her trainer assesses
how she is feeling and modifies her workouts accordingly.
She runs with her dog most weekends and strives to keep at
least two weight-training sessions per week with Aletha. On long
weekends she hikes with her dad, and on holidays she stays active
by scuba diving or kayaking.
Christine knows that staying active can be difficult while trying to
run a busy company. Never one to be daunted, she has learned to
pace herself and take the time off when she needs extra recovery
time. She has found that some activity is always better than doing
nothing.
For mom Joyce, fitness has been an ongoing pursuit. When she
retired, she let her fitness slide, and it bothered her. Until she was
50, she didn't notice a difference in her strength or her ability to
perform her day-to-day activities.
At 55 things became harder. Coming back to work in the city was
just the opportunity that she needed to do something for herself.
Ryan and Christine convinced her to give workout sessions at One
On One a try.
After her first session with personal trainer Aletha Nuttall, Joyce was
blown away. In addition to having a fabulous workout, she found
Aletha to be very approachable. Joyce weight-trains three times
per week with Aletha. She also completes three 30-minute cardio
sessions on the treadmill before her fitness session.
Joyce has found Aletha's workout sessions to be the right antidote
for a tough day. Like son Ryan, she has learned that if she is stressed
and tired and does not feel like working out, she goes to her session
anyways. After 10 minutes she is glad she came, and when she
leaves, she feels ready to face the day with confidence.
Although losing weight has been a wonderful bonus, it isn't why she
works out. For her, the mental boost has been wonderful. Working
out allows her to take control of her life. "When I'm exercising, I can
see and feel my muscles. There's also the little charge of putting on
your clothes and seeing how much better they fit."
What a great way to start the day! |

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
