Long days at the office are a common practice for most people. For Shaun Alblas, they were becoming much too common. Inspired by a close friend to change his lifestyle, Shaun made some inquiries and arrived at One On One Fitness. Two of his colleagues were currently working out at One On One. "They had nothing but excellent things to say about the trainers there, so I decided to contact them."

"Without a doubt my challenges have been breaking out of the mould of the past and getting away from old habits of eating and inconsistent exercising. Finding the time week after week where I could really get into a program was an obstacle in the beginning. Eventually exercise took priority and I incorporated it whenever I could."

"Probably the most significant change I had to make was my approach to overall nutrition. Eating at regular times throughout the day was a very big change for me as well as planning more healthy meals before hitting the grocery stores to shop." "To date, I have followed a great nutritional plan that finds balance and avoids following the 'latest' diet hype. I wanted something that worked for me without starving myself."

Tracking his results proved to be another dose of inspiration. Shaun records his workouts-"from what I did to how long I did it for. It's really a self-monitoring tool that changed my workout behaviour. After seeing positive results in such a short time in my workouts I know I can achieve much more."

"I see my trainer, Doug Bueckert, twice a week for one-hour weight sessions. On those days I do a cardio warm-up for twenty to thirty minutes, burning 300 to 400 calories. On my own after work, I do cardio for one hour, burning 900 to 1,000 calories per session. One of the worries I had when I started training with Doug was that the sessions might overlap with the same boring exercises. He has shown me that there are hundreds of exercises to keep it interesting!"

"My first session with One On One Fitness consisted of a Fitness Test. I went through an identical test four months later and saw the results I was looking for. Physically seeing your body change and the way you feel from the hard work is what makes it worthwhile." Shaun has noticed a dramatic increase in his strength, energy levels, and aerobic fitness level. He has also lost seventeen pounds and reduced his waist measurement by ten centimetres.

"The one thing I have learned to modify in my lifestyle has been my attitude. If you constantly feel like a victim, that outlook will continue to follow you, and it will show in your well-being. I think a good positive attitude can compensate for other things that may be lacking. When I look back four months ago at my stress levels and overall satisfaction in life and compare those levels to the present, I'm vastly amazed at the change. When you create challenges in diet and exercise, I think you assure yourself that other life trials will be headed with perseverance and determination. This has definitely helped me in my career and personal life."

Shaun's Tips:
  • Use music to keep you entertained!
  • Keep a record of your exercises and progress: This gives you a chance to reward yourself for special achievements. Don't be afraid to have a day where you reward yourself with the 'less' healthy meal items-keep in mind that you'll have to work it off the next day!
  • Hard work pays off! I noticed that my perseverance and determination in the gym transferred to my career and personal life.

Karla Laing knew something was wrong. “I have always been intuitive about my body but thought that the exhaustion I was feeling was a product of being a busy mother of a newborn and toddler.”
