“Small changes and a little focus can create some huge results!”

Tim Duthie is the winner of One On One Personal Fitness Instruction’s 2009 Lean and Mean Challenge. In 12 weeks, Tim decreased his original body fat level by a whopping 49.8 per cent!

Tim’s wife Lori joined the Fit 40+ and Fabulous program at One On One. He was very impressed with the results she was getting. “I was a little jealous … I knew that I needed a kick in the butt to get back into my routine and I wanted a kick-start. I've also learned that I needed some concrete goals to really motivate myself. I thought the Lean and Mean challenge would help me do that.”

At the Lean and Mean Launch on April 20th, I surveyed the room. I watched as a very quietly intense Tim Duthie took his place among the contenders. At 33 years of age, Tim and his wife Lori have two children. “With two kids, getting the time to exercise is more difficult,” says Tim. “I need to ensure that I do what I can when I can. I can't spend the afternoon in the gym anymore! My workouts need to be short, sweet, and to the point!”

“In high school, I was involved in school sports and realized the importance of fitness when I left home to go to college. The best $600 Mom ever spent was to get me a three-year membership at a gym near college. I got addicted to fitness and made it a regular part of my life.” As most of us with a family can attest, children have a way of testing our commitments. Tim’s regularity had waned.

To change his body, he had to change his thinking. “I've had to adjust my schedule to get exercise into a routine … The best thing I’ve found is to get up early, go to the gym, and get it done before other things interrupt and prevent me from getting it done. I also try to do something quick at lunchtime whenever I can.

“The toughest part of the challenge was the cardio. First, the time required was difficult to even get close to. Second, my legs had a tough time keeping up. I felt myself dragging some days because my legs just weren't used to it.” Eventually, that went away.

“The most rewarding aspect of the event was seeing the results in the mirror. A lot of people at work really were surprised at the results I attained. They noticed my dedication to the program and were very supportive in my efforts.”

Lori is very pleased with Tim’s results. “When I originally heard about the Lean and Mean, I was certain that Tim was up for the challenge. His dedication and commitment has been inspiring. I am so happy for him and thrilled that our family has seen firsthand the benefits of fitness and a healthy lifestyle.”

“Small changes and a little focus can create some huge results!” says Tim. He made a few changes to his diet, mostly around breakfast and snacks. “I bought more fresh fruit and vegetables and spent more time packing my lunch. I had a few times where the healthy eating fell to the wayside (mostly on weekends if we went out). I kept it to a few times and saw it help to ease some cravings. That allowed me to focus on the plan for most of the week.

“I want to continue some of the things that I learned from this program to stay lean. I also want to build a little more muscle size and definition. I plan to maintain a good chunk of the program, but not quite so much cardio!”

If you’re struggling with your fitness, Tim says, “Set small goals and keep measuring yourself over time. Don't get focused at the ups and downs, but the trends. Try to run a little faster, bike a little longer, live a little more, and over time you will see the results. Compete with yourself.

“I really enjoyed working with the team at One On One Fitness. I always left feeling exhausted yet exhilarated to continue. Small words of encouragement go a long way! Thank you very much Codrut and Sandra!”
