Healthy Tips :
6 Tips for Lean Living

Back to Healthy Tips

1) Portions are getting bigger out there. Here are some quick visuals to keep in mind:

-   1 medium apple or orange = tennis ball
-   1 medium potato = computer mouse
-   1 bagel = hockey puck
-   1 cup fruit = baseball
-   3 oz. meat = deck of cards
-   3 oz. grilled fish = check book
-   1 oz. cheese = four regular dice
-   1 tsp peanut butter = tip of thumb

2) Eat about every 3 to 3.5 hours. Regular meal times keep your appetite in check.

3) Cut down or cut out take-out food especially at lunch. You’ll prevent yourself from overeating high fat food. You also avoid that stuffed/bloated feeling which can make for a sluggish afternoon at the office. A lot of times it also may not even seem like high fat food. Chinese food is loaded with sodium and oil and salads like Greek and Caesar often contain more fat than a Big Mac.

4) Take leftovers for lunch. It’s a lot easier to eat healthier if you bring the food to work with you. Don’t forget to pack some snacks such as tuna with crackers or fruits with a lower fat cheese.

5) Cardio – for those people who do cardio and aren’t getting leaner, it’s probably time to increase the duration, frequency or mix it up. For those who aren’t doing cardio – get with the program – you should be doing cardio 4-6 times per week minimum of a half hour and build from there.

6) Alcohol is the second highest source of calories in the diet at 7 calories per gram and it has the dubious distinction of stimulating us to eat more. Therefore, cut it out or cut it down. I.e. create a spritzer – half wine with fruit juice or carbonated water.
