The W.O.M.A.N. conference: Helping women take back their health and waistline

“When can you take my mom’s scale away?” It’s not the first time fitness trainer Sandra Bueckert has witnessed the collateral damage that the preoccupation with weight has had on women and young girls. She decided to fight back.

The W.O.M.A.N. (War on Misinformation and Nutrition) conference will be the motivational event for any woman who has struggled with her health, body image and self esteem.

“Magazines, diet books and celebrities have brain washed women into believing that they aren’t good enough until they attain a certain size or body weight,” says Sandra Bueckert, fitness expert  and  event coordinator. “Sadly, many women succumb to the pressure. We spend our time obsessing about food, the scale and our weight.”

A 2008 Self magazine survey suggests that 6 in 10 women suffer from disordered eating. No wonder.  Estimated at over 50 billion per year, the weight loss industry needs the consumer to continually lose and regain their weight. Consumers drift from diet plan to diet plan unaware of the long term impact.  For example, low cal diets impact the metabolism. The metabolism slows down in order to conserve energy which makes weight management difficult. When normal eating resumes, women simply aren’t burning as many calories. Surplus calories become surplus pounds.

The W.O.M.A.N. Conference is an initiative to encourage, educate and inspire women to consciously look at their thinking, eating and exercises habits. The 2009 W.O.M.A.N. conference is a day long event that presents her message along with a dynamic and engaging group of speakers such as life coach Jamie Andersen, psychologist Candace Curry and health and fitness specialist Colleen Parsons.

Slated to host 200 attendees, the event will be held on Saturday June 6, 2009 at the South Calgary Community Association.

What was her true motivation? Revenge. She knows what it’s like to be written off and not taken seriously by friends and family. Her client’s connect with her because she understands. You Are What You Think: What Are You Feeding Your Brain?

The core beliefs that we hold about ourselves and the world create how we feel and how we behave. In this session you will discover how identifying your unhelpful beliefs can sustain unhappiness in areas such as weight/body image, relationships, communication, and goal achievement. We will experiment with some strategies for changing and managing unhelpful beliefs.

Embracing Your Authenticity and Passion

The message we receive in our society is that we need to have what other people have (people perceived as successful), and that by doing (emulating) what they have done and having what they have, we will finally be happy. An example of this in action is our common desire to achieve the buff image of Hollywood celebrities and media personalities who are marketed as the standard of beauty to attain. As often is the case, if and when we actually achieve the goal, we realize that it does nothing for our happiness because we have not dealt with who we really are.

When we focus on who we are (awareness) and become who we are authentically, then we naturally do the things that bring us true happiness. We then come from a place of authenticity and passion and do what is right for us as individuals. Come away from this session with a new perspective of yourself and on success, as defined by you for yourself.

We are metabolic machines that require caloric energy and nutrients to stimulate growth, development, recovery from exercise, weight loss, gain, and maintenance.  Metabolism is often thought to be the enemy, where, in fact, it is the ally. What is this metabolic engine and how can we maximize its potential? How can we stop fighting it and get it on board to get us where we want to go? This session will challenge you to think outside of the "caloric restriction box" and to gain some insight into turning your metabolic engine into a turbo-charged high performer.
